Wayne Rooney names Liverpool player who was ‘fortunate’ to avoid red card vs Man Utd

Wayne Rooney remarked that Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was lucky to avoid a red card during the 2-2 stalemate with Manchester United on Sunday.

In a thrilling match at Old Trafford, Liverpool paid the price for not capitalizing on their chances, adding another layer of intrigue to the Premier League title race.

The visitors got on the scoreboard first with Luis Diaz’s goal, but were later stunned by brilliant goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, putting United ahead in the second half.

Despite their efforts, Liverpool only managed to draw, with Mohamed Salah securing a point with a late penalty. However, they failed to overtake Arsenal at the top of the table.

The match’s pivotal moment was Fernandes’ remarkable goal, which was United’s initial attempt on target. He capitalized on Jarell Quansah’s mistake to lob the ball over Kelleher from the halfway line.

While Rooney applauded the United skipper’s goal, he also pointed out Kelleher’s stroke of luck in not being sent off for his attempt to block the shot outside his box.

‘The technique is fantastic – he almost stabs it in and gets the right amount of spin and just enough elevation,’ Rooney said on Premier League Productions.

‘That’s such a hard skill to do first time with the ball coming across you so it’s an incredible finish.

‘The keeper is actually a bit fortunate he doesn’t get a hand on the ball because he would have got a red card!’

As the season heads into its final seven matches, the battle for the title is intensifying, with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City all neck and neck, only a single point apart.

Despite Manchester United securing an important point against Liverpool, Wayne Rooney, at 38, remains confident that Liverpool will clinch the league title in what is anticipated to be Jurgen Klopp’s last season at the helm.

‘I know it’s only seven games but a lot will happen between now and the end of the season. I still think Liverpool will nick it,’ he said.

Liverpool are set to take on Atalanta in the upcoming Europa League quarter-final this Thursday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal and Manchester City are gearing up for challenging Champions League matches, with Arsenal facing Bayern Munich and Manchester City going up against Real Madrid.
