Erik ten Hag opens up on Cristiano Ronaldo saga & Man Utd ‘mess’

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lost no sleep over the decision to get rid of Cristiano Ronaldo from the club.

Ronaldo’s exit is one of a number of key decisions taken by the Dutchman that has seemingly turned things around for the Red Devils.

United finally ended their trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup against Newcastle United and remain in the hunt in three more competitions.

Asked if there was a lack of discipline at Old Trafford, Ten Hag replied: “There was — and I don’t have to lie about it.

“Top players like structure, not only on the pitch, so you need some rules.

“In every organisation when there are no rules and discipline in taking the rules seriously, you create a mess. “It was quite obvious because I could see on the pitch what was going on.”

Ten Hag consistently left Ronaldo on the bench and this led to the Portuguese star airing his grievances in an interview with Piers Morgan.

The former Ajax head coach is not worried by that decision as he spoke ahead of United’s important clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

He added: “I had reasons and I also knew the consequence if it was a negative outcome.

“But I am not worrying and I sleep well in those nights. “I have to take decisions in respect of advancing the club.

“I have to see and face the consequences, the impact of the decisions.”

Since the World Cup, after Ronaldo’s exit, Manchester United have been in frightening form. They have won 16 of their 20 matches and lost just one – in a 3-2 thriller with Arsenal.
