Thomas Tuchel sends message to Ruben Loftus-Cheek over Chelsea role

Thomas Tuchel says Ruben Loftus-Cheek is ‘too talented’ to be a squad player at Chelsea and backed him to be a star if he can fulfil his potential.

Loftus-Cheek started as the London club secured a 1-0 victory away to Malmo on Tuesday – his first start in the UEFA Champions League since 2015.

The England star has started just 17 Premier League games for Chelsea since his senior debut seven years ago but after loan spells at Crystal Palace and Fulham has begun to force his way back into the first-team.

‘I was a bit worried in the first 15 minutes if he could find another gear but I heard before the game that it was his Champions League start since 2015 so I think we can give the boys credit sometimes to maybe be a bit nervous, find their way into the game,’ Tuchel said after the win.

‘He fought his way through. Maybe it is symbolic that he didn’t disappear or stay invisible. He wants to dominate opponents, not just to be a part of the game because I think he is too talented to just be a part of the group.’

Loftus-Cheek has played nine matches in all competitions so far this campaign, featuring in Chelsea’s last five Premier League games.

With his role in the team growing, Tuchel is eager for the midfielder to continue asserting himself.

‘He needs to use his full potential, this is the absolute key for him and if he does it, he can be a big part of the squad and that is why I am very happy.

‘He was involved in a lot of dangerous moments for us and I am happy he pushes himself through these little downs like in the first 15 minutes then comes up with a strong performance.

‘The next step is to show consistently and to push himself because his limit can be constantly pushed, he has so much potential.’
