Barcelona to sack Setien after furious bust-up with players following Celta draw

Barcelona are set to sack Quique Setien as manager unless results improve and they win the Liga title or Champions League this campaign, according to reports.

The former Real Betis manager, who only took the Barca job in January as replacement for Valverde, has lost the confidence of the dressing room, while the board are also unhappy with recent poor displays.

Unless the club’s displays for the rest of the 2019-20 season have a significant improvement, it is believed that Setien will leave his post this summer.

Setien was signed on a two-and-a-half-year deal in January, however as things stand the Barcelona coach may not be able to see out more than a few months of this contract.

And Barcelona players were involved in a dressing room bust-up with the under-fire manager after their 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo.

Luis Suarez, who scored twice in the draw, told reporters after the match that the club’s coaches were to blame for the club’s poor away form, which has seen them win only two games from their last six.

Player power at Barcelona is strong which is led by players like Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique – and the dressing room has also turned against Setien due to confusion over his tactics and unhappiness at his comments in the press.

Setien has also lost the confidence of the club’s board, who hoped the coach would help improve things after Valverde’s exit – however poor results has not made this possible.

What could save his job, however, is the fact that Bara could still end this campaign as La Liga and Champions League champions – they are two points below league leaders Real Madrid, and have a second-leg game with Napoli in August.

Setien was never the first choice after the sack of Valverde, with Ronald Koeman and Xavi both turning rejecting the job before he was appointed.

Former Barca player Xavi, now coach of Qatari club Al Sadd, has conceded he is preparing to manage the club in the future, while current B team manager Xavi Garcia Pimienta is also an option.

However, unless Setien manages to guide the team to Champions League and La Liga success, he is on borrowed time.
