Edouard Mendy is undergoing his medical at Chelsea after the club agreed a £22 million fee with Rennes for the goalkeeper.
The deal is expected to be completed in the next 24 hours after his Chelsea medical and finalising personal terms.
Pressure has increased on Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to bring in a new goalkeeper after two errors from Kepa Arrizabalaga from their first two Premier League games of the season.
Chelsea have been in negotiations with Rennes even before the start of the campaign over the possibility of bringing Mendy to Stamford Bridge.
Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan was also on the blues’ list of goalkeeping options but a price tag of £32 million put Chelsea off.

Chelsea’s technical director, Petr Cech has strong links with Rennes and has been hugely involved in the deal to sign Mendy.

The 28-year-old kept nine clean sheets in 24 league matches last campaign.
Edouard Mendy will become Chelsea’s seventh first-team summer signing, joining Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and Kavertz.
And Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes Kepa Arrizabalaga will benefit from the competition if Edouard Mendy joins the London team.
Bosnich said: “I don’t think it’s the end. But it’s been quite obvious for some time that Frank Lampard and his staff aren’t over the moon about him, we saw that last season.
“He needs competition. All big clubs should have competition in every position, including goalkeeper.”
