Maguire levels criticism at Man Utd teammates after Southampton draw

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire says the entire team were guilty of giving away possession too easily, after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Southampton on Monday.

United had come from behind in the game and held a 2-1 lead in injury time, but substitute Michael Obafemi scored from a corner in the 96th minute to get a point for Southampton.

It is a huge blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as a victory would have seen them move to third in the Premier League table while a draw leaves them fifth and outside the top-four.

Maguire was frustrated with the Red devils’ inability to see out the game, admitting they weren’t at their best, with each player in the team not holding on to possession and the strikers not clinical enough.

‘Yeah we’re disappointed. We got control of the game, had numerous chances to kill the game off,’ Harry Maguire told Sky Sports.

‘We weren’t at our best, there’s loads of areas we need to improve in, but we did enough to win the game and a set-play has killed us in the end.

‘They’re a team with no pressure on them, coming to Old Trafford, no fans, playing for pride in the league but cant get relegated and cant get Europe.

”We knew they were going to press, they pressed like mad, jumped like mad and we didn’t handle it well enough in the first 20 minutes, gave them a soft goal.

‘We got ourselves back into the game, where we wanted to be, but the second half was a bit of a slog. ‘We wasn’t good enough on the ball, gave the ball away far too much, as a team, everyone in the team.

‘We brought a bit of pressure onto ourselves but we felt like we did enough to win the game in the end and we should kill it off with a third goal.’

And Brandon Williams had to leave the field with a head injury after all substitutions had been made. However, Maguire said United should be able to defend a corner like that with points on the line.

‘Obviously going down to 10 men is unfortunate, hopefully Brandon is okay, I haven’t seen him yet,’ continued the United captain.

‘I haven’t looked at it but we’ve been really good lately, defending set-plays is something we’ve been really good on lately.’
