Manchester United have confirmed that eight players will leave the club having reached the end of their contracts at Old Trafford.
First-team keepers Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira have been released together with six stars of United’s academy in Jacob Carney, Mark Helm, Iestyn Hughes, Arnau Puigmal, Max Taylor and Aliou Traore.
Romero, who joined the club on a free transfer in 2015, served as David de Gea’s understudy for five years until the return of Dean Henderson from Sheffield United last summer.
The Argentine goalkeeper did not make a single appearance during his last campaign at Old Trafford.
The Red devils have also confirmed Juan Mata remains in discussions with the club over signing a new deal along with veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant.
The Spanish midfielder started just nine matches in all competitions for the club during the 2020-21 campaign, scoring on the last day of the Premier League season against Wolves.
United have the option to extend his stay at the club by a further year.

‘I’ve kept the dialogue with Juan and we’re due to speak again very soon,’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in May. ‘Of course, he’s not played as much as he’d like and that’s a decision that we’ll make with him.
‘He’s in charge of his own future and he’s been such a good servant for the club,” Ole added. “But of course, it’s hard, as I’ve said so many times, to leave good players out, good people out of the team.
‘It’s about what does he want as his next step in his career? Is it [to] still play out his career here, or is it going somewhere else?
‘We haven’t made a final decision yet.’
