Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed he will struggle to reverse Alexis Sanchez’s faltering career after another poor performance from the Manchester United forward against Paris Saint-Germain.
The former Arsenal player has struggled to find any semblance of his best form since his transfer to Old Trafford last January.
After a goal and assist at the weekend, the in-form Anthony Martial kept his place in the starting line-up for the visit of PSG but a injury late in the first half gave Sanchez an opportunity to stake his claim.
The 30-year-old failed to adapt to the pace of the match, however, regularly conceded possession and didn’t create anything throughout his time on the pitch.
Assessing Sanchez’s performance, Solskjaer said after the 2-0 loss: ‘I can’t do anything about Alexis Sanchez. When he plays he needs to find himself.
‘That’s the reality, that Jesse and Anthony have been big parts of our squad and second half we didn’t have the pace and movement to get in behind them.
‘It was an even game and it’s always going to be difficult against good teams. The first goal is always going to be important. The way we conceded it was disappointing. The second goal was quality – the ground he makes up to get into the box is brilliant.
‘He’s lightning quick. You need to get your body in against him.
‘This is a level up from what we have played against. That’s the level we want to get to. Top four is one thing, but Manchester United should be at the top.’
