Donny Van de Beek was left out of the Ajax’s squad that played against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday because of transfer developments, according to reports.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and Barcelona this summer having seen a transfer to Real Madrid fail to materialise.

Van de Beek was expected to play against Eintracht, but De Telegraaf report that he was omitted after there was progress in a possible exit from Ajax.

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag confirmed after the match Van de Beek was not injured. He said: ‘There are indeed developments that keep him out of the squad [to face Eintracht Frankfurt].’

It is still unclear which team has stepped up their interest or whether the player or Ajax made the decision to drop him from the team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be a huge fan of Van de Beek, while the Dutchman’s former head coach Ronald Koeman has just taken charge at the Nou Camp.

Ronald Koeman coached Van de Beek on in the international side and is reportedly planning a major overhaul of the Barca squad.

When Van de Beek was quizzed about his future at the club, he said: ‘It is very messy, in any case a very messy period in terms of transfers.

‘Nothing is certain yet. I am still a player of Ajax and I am still proud to be there. ‘If there had not been the coronavirus, it might have been different now. There is no clarity now and we have to wait and see how it turns out.

‘I’m still here and after all these years I still have a lot of fun. If I also play at Ajax next season, I still have a lot of fun. You won’t hear me complaining.’
