Arsenal offered Christian Eriksen in swap deal for Granit Xhaka

Xhaka and Eriksen

Inter Milan are willing to offer Christian Eriksen to Arsenal in a swap deal to sign Granit Xhaka, according to reports in Italy.

Eriksen has so far struggled to secure a regular role under Antonio Conte since he made the £17m transfer move from Tottenham to the Italian club in January.

Conte is keen to strengthen his midfield options and his major target has been Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, but the blues refused to sell the France international in the summer window.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter are now considering alternatives to the Chelsea midfielder and Xhaka is on their shortlist ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims that Inter Milan already have intermediaries working to gauge Arsenal’s interest and find out if the gunners would be willing to sign Eriksen and lose Xhaka.

Eriksen has already made it clear that he would be open to leaving the club in January. He said: ‘This isn’t what I dreamed of. All players want to play as much as possible, but the coach decides who gets to go on the pitch.

‘It is a strange situation, as the fans want to see me playing more and so would I, but the coach has different ideas and as a player I have to respect that.

‘Right now it may not be going so well in the club, but in the past, when I did not play that much either, there was great success. I am concentrating on my football, then when the transfer window opens we will see if something will happen or not.’

Xhaka, meanwhile, almost left Arsenal a year ago after he swore at supporters during a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace last campaign.

But he has credited Mikel Arteta for convincing him to stay. Xhaka said: ‘I have to be honest, I’m very honest with everyone. I was very, very close to leaving the club. I had, until this moment, had a great, great time in this football club.

‘When Mikel arrived, I had a very good meeting with him, very good conversations.

‘Mikel was the guy. He turned me around and gave me a second chance, and he showed me he trusted me and I have tried to give him everything back.’
