Chelsea and AC Milan have reportedly reached an agreement to swap Alvaro Morata for Gonzalo Higuain dur the January transfer window.
Both strikers have endured underwhelming seasons, with Morata not even making the Chelsea squad for the last three Premier League games while Higuain has not scored since October.
But according to Sport Mediaset, the two teams are working on the final details of an exchange which is now described as inevitable, with just the nature of the swap still yet to be decided.
Technically, Higuain is still on loan at San Siro from Juventus, so the Italian champions must give their approval to the transfer, but club bosses believe upcoming matches against Frosinone and SPAL will be his final, goodbye games.
There are two options on ground, and the first would see Higuain’s loan at Milan terminated and he would move to Chelsea on loan instead – with the possibility to make it permanent – with Morata going the other way on an 18-month loan.
The other option would see an exchange of six-month loans and the option for Higuain to return to AC Milan next season.
Either way, it now looks certain that Maurizio Sarri will be reunited with his former player who scored 36 goals in their one season together at Napoli, with Higuain desperate to work under his old manager once again.
Sarri was asked about the interest in Higuain last week and did not play down the speculation, saying: ‘I like him a lot. He is a great man and a great player. Even so, I don’t want to talk about Gonzalo since he plays for AC Milan.’
Chelsea and Milan are also believed to be discussing possible deals for Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko, with the latter on loan at San Siro.
